Circulation Tips for Your Bathroom and Kitchen

Happy Air Quality Awareness Week! As the weather warms up, let’s take a moment to appreciate the natural breeze outside and learn how we can improve the air in our homes. The most common trouble areas start in your bathroom and kitchen. When we bathe and cook, moisture builds up and creates circulation problems. Luckily there are ways you can keep the air fresh!

Here are some circulation tips you can use for your bathroom and kitchen:

Open the windows. Letting some fresh air into your home is a must. With the weather warming up, it’s the best time to allow a natural breeze inside. While it seems like an obvious solution for quality air circulation, it’s always a good reminder.

Invest in an air purifier.
Air purifiers are an effective way to improve the air quality and reduce air pollution in your home. These portable systems are great at eliminating odours and dust from the air - and they’re easily affordable!

Install ceiling fans. This is another efficient way to create more air flow. Ceiling fans pick up thicker air and spread it around the home, balancing levels of CO2. Your room will feel less stuffy and you’ll know that the air is clearer.

Use vent fans. It’s easy to forget to use them or to underestimate just how great they work. Vent fans suck out most of the moisture and pollution trapped in your bathroom after a hot shower and in the kitchen after baking. If you don’t have one already, make sure you invest in one!

Check the attic vent. Most attics have a vent - make sure it isn’t covered. When your attic is too warm, heat can sink down into your home and pollute clean air. Start by making sure that nothing is in the way of letting it do it’s job.

Use Less Energy on Your Water Heater

Today is Earth Day - the perfect time to go green in your home! You might ask, “How can I save the most energy?” While there are countless ways to help the environment, you can start with your water heating system. Water heating is the second largest energy waster, which accounts for 14-18 percent of your household’s total energy costs.

With that being said, here are five tips to cut down your water heating use:

1. Turn down the tank’s thermostat. The Energy Department recommends most households lower it to 120 degrees. If your thermostat doesn’t have a numbered gauge, turn it half way between the “low” and “medium” marks. For every 10 degrees you lower it, you’ll also save about 3-5 percent on your bill at the end of the month.

2. Use less hot water. We all love a long hot shower, but when you’re a family of four, using 700 gallons of water every week, you’re wasting a three-year supply of drinking water for one person! Try to cut back a little at home. Every minute counts!

3. Drain and sediment. Tanks have the natural tendency to build up sediment, which reduces efficiency and makes saving energy a bit more challenging. The solution? Drain the tank to keep it running smoothly. Most manufacturers recommend draining the tank once or twice a year, so call the experts for help!

4. Insulate exposed hot-water pipes. By insulating hot water pipes, faucet-water will become about 2-4 degrees warmer - saving you time, energy, and money!

Celebrate Lawn & Garden Month

With April being National Lawn and Garden Month, you’re probably starting to think about outdoor planting. And as the temps slowly heat up on Long Island, you’ll be able to spend more time outside - relaxing in the yard and preparing fresh greenery. No matter the size of your garden, it’s important to plant and clean your lawn properly.

Here’s 4 simple tips to get you started this month:

Get the right mowing height. It’s a good idea to leave your lawn a little longer during the warmer months - most do well at 2” to 3”.

Use a sharp blade for mowing. A dull blade will likely tear your grass as opposed to cutting it.

Leave the grass clippings. It’s important to leave the grass clippings on your lawn as it recycles plant nutrients back into the soil. It’s also a great fertilizer.

Water and fertilize your lawn.
But don’t overdo it. Too much water will drown the grass and too much fertilizer will burn it. Your lawn will survive better if it’s under-watered and under-fertilized!

Now that you have your lawn in check, it’s time to make sure your sprinkler systems are working properly - and that’s where we come in! You’ll want to prevent situations of over watering and keep your garden healthy all season long. Call NY Plumbing and Sewer Rooter at 718-514-7145 for a thorough sprinkler system inspection today!

Wellness Wednesday: 5 Eco-Friendly Ways to Clean the House

It’s often easy to forget the harmful effects of household cleaning products we use on a regular basis. Choosing more natural products and removing toxic ones goes a long way to ensure you’re breathing fresh, clean air.

Looking for alternative methods? Here’s how you can get started now:

Look under your kitchen sink. Glance over the products you have - eliminate the toxic ones. Place these in a locked storage bin for your community’s next Household Hazardous Pickup Day. Chemical-free products create a safer environment for the whole family.

Replace toxic products. Choose non-toxic substitutes. Look for “Signal Words” on labels - danger, warning, poison, caution - all indications of health concerns and products that you should avoid using in your home. Try alternatives like baking soda or lemon juice. Click here for a list of chemical-free recipes you can try this season.

Recycle cleaning materials. Save money and help the environment! Reusable mops, safer sponges, rags (instead of paper), and HEPA vacuums provide your home with clean air.

Clean indoor air with plants. Plants are an organic way to reduce indoor air pollution in your home - add a lightly lavender antibacterial spray for a lovely, clean scent that disinfects. Not to mention, houseplants add more oxygen too!

Use your senses. Smell, hear, feel - if your nose detects rotten food or dirty pet products, it may be time for a cleaning. Floors feel sticky? Grab a clean rag or mop. Your senses will tell you which household areas need to be attended to.

Reminder- New Water Heater Requirements April 15th

Beginning April 15th, new water heater requirements will be in effect.  While this does not mean that you have to replace your water heater before then, you may want to consider doing so to avoid cost hikes and space related changes.

The new requirements will ultimately save money, reduce carbon pollution, and enhance our overall energy security, but their initial changes can affect you and your family.

Some of the changes are:

  • Higher priced units – up to 35% more expensive
  • Larger units
  • More complicated installation methods – cost of installation may increase
  • Possible home remodeling costs if water heater doesn’t fit in your space
For more information, click here.  After April 15th, manufacturers cannot produce or sell water heaters that do not adhere to these requirements, however wholesalers can still sell them in their warehouses until their inventory is gone.

Give us a call today at 516-874-7937 for more information on these new regulations or to book a consultation, where we can evaluate your current water heater and provide you with options on the next steps.

3 Easy Ways to Conserve Water

Earth Month is underway! With warmer weather on the horizon, you’ll be tempted to spend more time outdoors - in the yard or the pool. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about how to keep things eco-friendly.

Did you know that nearly 9 billion gallons of water are devoted to outdoor water use? There are ways you can help! Below are 3 easy ways to conserve water:

Use a brush or broom.
Sweep driveways, sidewalks, and steps instead of hosing them down. Keeping the outdoor hose running for long periods of time can cause unnecessary water waste.

Wash the car by hand. Lose the hose - you can save a lot of unnecessary water by using water from a bucket. Grab a sponge and you’re good to go. Alternatively you can go to a commercial car wash that recycles water.

Cover the pool. This will prevent water from evaporating when your pool is not in use.

Let’s keep things eco-friendly this season! Contact NY Plumbing and Sewer Rooter to get water and energy efficient plumbing fixtures installed. Call us today at 516.874.7937 or visit our website for more information.
