You Could Have Hidden Plumbing Leaks!

Plumbing leaks are not always as obvious as a dripping faucet or a puddle on the floor.  Many times leaks can go unnoticed for long periods of time before being discovered.  The plumbing pipes themselves are often hidden behind walls or under countertops, making it difficult for you to even realize that a leak is present.  To ensure you have a leak free home you should check a few common areas for hidden leaks:

  1. Walls- Old or damaged pipes located behind or inside walls are a very common source for plumbing leaks.  Leaks inside a wall can go on for days or even weeks before being noticed, but after time wet spots and paint bubbles will form.
  2. Basement- Mold an wet areas are usually the first signs of a leak in your basement.  Basement water leaks usually originate from corroded or damaged pipes, which will need to be replaced immediately.
  3. Sinks- Hidden leaks often start in the pipes located underneath kitchen or bathroom sinks.  Inspect the cabinet or area underneath your sink regularly to ensure there is no dripping.
If you notice problems with any of these areas call New York Plumbing and Sewer Rooter at 516-874-7937 or our Emergency Line at 877-713-8136 or visit us online at http://goo.gl/ifjUyr.  For more information on common plumbing leak areas please visit http://goo.gl/cPMV81

How Stuff Works: Plumbing Basics

Plumbing often seems very basic, but that is only because we don't see behind the scenes.  What we see is the shower, sink or toilet but what we don't see is all of the piping behind the walls.  Plumbing follows the basic laws of nature- gravity, pressure and water seeking its own level.  Knowing these basics can help you take steps to avoid complications with your plumbing in the future.

The plumbing system in your home will usually consist of two separate subsystems.  On will bring in freshwater, while the other takes out waste water.  The water coming into your home is under enough pressure to send it upstairs, around corners and wherever it needs to go.  As it comes into your home the water passes through a meter that will record the amount that you use.  The main water shutoff or stop valve is usually located near the meter.  In the event that you experience a plumbing emergency it is important that you quickly close the main shutoff valve, otherwise when a pipe bursts it will flood your house very quickly.  If an emergency is confined solely to the sink tub or toilet, you may not need to shut off your entire water supply, which is why most fixtures have their own individual stop valves.
