Decorating Your Bathroom for Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner and the Night of the Living Dead is sure to bring some surprises to the Nassau County area. Just kidding, but it doesn't hurt to get in the spirit of the season and what better place to start than the bathroom. There are a number of different things you can try and there is no limit on where you can take it. Put your creativity to the test and see just how festive you can make the bathroom or bathrooms in your home!

Scented Candles
Everybody loves a pleasant fall scent. Whether it is a nice apple crisp or pumpkin pie, everyone enjoys satisfying their nostrils. So why not bring these scents into the bathroom? Yankee and American Candle both offer a line of fall flavored candles that are sure to spice up any room in your home!

Fall Curtains
The bathroom window really ties together the whole room. If your paint allows it, you should consider throwing a fall themed curtain on your rod. Maybe one that features a Halloween pumpkin or a nice orange and green blend that lets your guests know you're in the fall spirit!

Pumpkin Dispenser
Your soap dispenser doesn't have to be bland and boring, it can draw eyes to your beautiful vanity set up. If you don't want to go all out with the pumpkin, you could just pick out a dispenser that matches your fall themed bathroom. If you're really into design, you can also pick out some hand towels or napkins that bring together all of your decor.

Spooky Shower Curtains
We've all seen the horror films where the man jumps out from behind the shower curtain to haunt his targets. Well, you could scare some guests by purchasing a spooky shower curtain of your own. You could go online and scroll through a number of curtains that feature shadows of Jason, Freddy Krueger and some of your other favorite Halloween villains. It is sure to spook at least one unsuspecting bathroom goer.

Unfortunately, decor is not the only thing we have to worry about in the bathroom. Halloween leads us directly into Thanksgiving and that means more guests will be pouring into your home and using your plumbing. It is up to you to take the proper precautions and make sure your pipes, fixtures and faucets are prepared for a busy holiday season.

What You Need To Know About Floor Heating

Floor heating, or radiant floor heating, has been around since Ancient Rome and it is gaining popularity of late. Traditional heating systems do a great job throughout the winter, but they leave out one key component-- the floor. We all know heat rises, so what better place to start then the bottom of your home? Keep reading to learn a little more about what radiant floor heating can do for you.

No More Cold Feet
On those cold, New York winter mornings, there is nothing worse than getting out of the shower. It's nice and warm on the inside, but the last thing you want to do is put your feet on the iceberg that is your bathroom floor. Well, installing a heating system on that very same floor can take away all of your fears. Start ending your showers with confidence!

Smooth Heat
Compared to a forced air system, floor heating gives you a nice even temperature. When air is blown into a room, it settles near the ceiling and then only half of your body is getting the desired temperature. With a radiant floor system, it builds from the bottom up, evenly distributing heat along the way.

Options
Radiant floor heating has evolved over the years and it has split into two main categories.
  • Hydraulic Systems- These floor heating systems tend to have a high initial cost with a lot of savings down the road. They pump hot water through a series of plastic pipes under your floor to maintain the desired room temperature. Over time, this saves a ton of energy because the hot water is often recycled and pumped back through the system. It is also better for indoor air quality and homes where people have asthma.
  • Electric Systems- These are perfect for heating small areas like your bathroom but they are often too expensive for the entire home. This system uses a series of plastic mats, which contain copper wires that radiate heat throughout the room.
If you're interested in learning more about the array of heating services we offer, don't hesitate to give us a call. Our friendly customer service representatives will advise you on your options and send a technician out whenever you are ready. At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter, we take customer service seriously, and it shows on each and every visit.

The Man In the Toilet

long island plumber, Drain Cleaning Nassau, nassau county plumber, Pipe repair Nassau, plumber Nassau County, LI drain cleaning
Hello,

My name is Tommy and I live inside your toilet. First a little background on me. I was born microscopically small because of a recessive gene on my dad's side and that is how I got in here. My parents lost me when I was very young, you know, because I am so microscopic and all. I was looking for friends and I found some down here in your toilet and we have a bone to pick with you.

First off, I know you're stubborn, but you can't keep flushing wipes down the toilet big guy. They might say 'flush-able,' but believe me they aren't. Once they get down here where we live, they never dissolve and they just cause a giant road block. So for our sake and yours, please keep the wipes in the trash bin.

Secondly, please take the makeup products off the back of the toilet bowl. Your wife has so much of it that I am sure you are running out of room, but the toilet is no place to rest it. I have a friend who lives in a toilet a town over and he said a lipstick cover fell down his drain and they were out of commission for a week. I don't want that for either of us, so please don't put anything up there that could fall in!

We also need to talk about you cleaning things up a little better. There are people living down here! When it is time for bathroom cleanup, make sure you get a good scrub in under the seat, lid and inside of the bowl. Don't use those tank cleaners because they could cause more problems than they're worth. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Next time the drain starts to back up, use our friend the plunger instead of Drano. The chemicals in Drano do dissolve the clog, but they also eat away at the plumbing.

We try and keep things neat and tidy down here in the drain but we are very little people. Sometimes it takes the help of a plumbing professional to take care of drain clogs. The best guys for the job are over at  Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter so I would suggest giving them a call. All of the neighborhood toilet people are raving about them.

How You Can Help Keep Water Clean

Water is essential to life on earth, and that does not solely mean human beings. This earth is all of ours to share, and keeping the water on it clean is everyone's responsibility. August is National Water Quality Month, so there is no better time to learn how you can contribute to a cleaner future for our water!
National Water Quality Month, water quality tips, Nassau County Plumber, Plumbing Nassau County, plumbing queens, Plumbing Suffolk County
Be mindful of outdoor surfaces.
When a summer storm ends, the runoff heads towards the storm drains to be treated and recycled. On it's path, the water picks up all types of pollutants from hard surfaces like asphalt and concrete. If possible, you might want to switch your outdoor surfaces to paving stone or gravel.

Keep non-degradable products out of the toilet.
Not only is it bad for your plumbing, but throwing things like wipes and tampon applicators down the toilet can really disrupt the sewage process. These items often wind up littering the environment or worse- they wind up hurting animals.

Keep certain things out of your sink drain.
Certain household cleaners don't belong in your sink. Chemical based cleaners might contain sodium hypochlorite, ammonia and formaldehyde. And in case you were wondering, you don't want any of those chemicals anywhere near your water.

Clean up after pets.
Not only is it courteous, but cleaning up after pets can also help maintain a cleaner water supply. Fecal matter and water simply don't mix, but far too often this winds up being the case. When it rains, your pets waste is washed from the street or the grass into storm drains. That very same water is then dumped into a water treatment plant to be recycled. Gross!

Upgrade your plumbing.
Old pipes are susceptible to rust and corrosion that can contaminate your water. Galvanized steel piping was the standard in many old homes, but you should consider upgrading to the much safer PVC piping.

Improving the water quality on earth is going to take quite some time, but you have to start somewhere. If every person does their part, we can have safe drinking water for centuries to come.

If you are interested in upgrading your plumbing to ensure cleaner water for your family, call the experts at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter. We can handle repairs, installations and just about anything else you throw at us. To schedule an appointment call 516-874-7937 or visit our website!

5 Reminders that Water is our World

Whether you let the sink run while brushing your teeth, take a long hot bath instead of a 5-minute shower, or let a small toilet leak go unfixed, you might think to yourself "No big deal."

The truth, however, is that these small situations add up to major water loss and it's a resource that our world truly relies on. Below are 5 eye opening facts that remind us just how valuable water really is.

  1. Approximately 400 billion gallons of water are used in the US each day
  2. The average American home uses over 100,000 gallons each year
  3. You can save up to four gallons of water each morning by turning off the tap when brushing your teeth
  4. A bath uses more than double the amount of water required for a shower
  5. About 750 million people lack access to a safe and clean source of drinking water

Will you think twice next time you run the faucet longer than you should? Share your thoughts with us on our Facebook page.

Wet Wipes are Plaguing Our New York City Sewer Systems

Nassau County Plumber, Wet Wipes
According to a recent article in The New York Times titled, "The Wet Wipes Box Says Flush, but the New York City Sewer System Says Don't," New York City is working to combat the destruction wets wipes in plumbing networks cause.

Wet wipes, originally used for baby care, are now growing popular with adults and becoming increasingly present in worldwide sewer systems. The problem, however, is that the box says flushable but the truth is they're indestructible. Combined with congealed grease and other sewage materials, the city is left spending an enormous amount of money mechanically collecting solid waste for disposal.

Public awareness is in the works - with the intent to spread the importance of throwing "flushable" wipes in the trash.

Are you one of the many consumers mislead by the improper labeling? Help educate others on how destructive these little guys can be. For the complete story, click here »

World Plumbing Day 2015: 3 Reasons Plumbing is Important to Us

World Plumbing Day is less about celebrating our pipes, toilets and sinks, and more about celebrating the plumbing industry and how it's innovations have allowed our communities to grow and live out healthy and sustainable lives. Whether you have already upgraded to water-efficient plumbing fixtures or not, the technology is there and available - which is something to celebrate.

Water efficiency = energy savings. The connection between energy and water is often overlooked, yet such an important relationship to understand. The less water we use, the less water we need to heat, which enables us to save in multiple facets of our home living costs.

Plumbing brings comfort into our lives. We often forget to be grateful for the lifestyle plumbing provides. Developing countries without access to clean water are missing one major system and that system is plumbing. From edible meals to soothing baths, we wouldn't be able to enjoy the luxuries we do without plumbing.

It has extended our life expectancy. It's true - more than any other medical advancement, drinkable water has directly lead to longer lives. Without it, we would have increased exposure to deadly and life threatening diseases.

What parts of plumbing are you thankful for this World Plumbing Day? Visit us on Facebook and let us know #WhyPlumbingMatters to you!

Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter offers all of the plumbing, sewer and drain services you need to keep your home up and running perfectly. Call us today at 877.713.8136 for emergency services or visit our website for more information.

Get the Lowdown on Household Plumbing Leaks

With World Plumbing Day this Wednesday and Fix a Leak Week quickly approaching, let's take a moment to divulge into those ever so frustrating and always so sneaky plumbing leaks!

As a homeowner you probably know leaks waste water, money and (when it comes to fixing them) your time, but here's a few important things you might not know:

In the U.S. alone, plumbing leaks are responsible for over $6 billion worth of property damage each year! How much of that is your share of expenses?

Mold and damage to your home's foundation are two unfortunate side effects of undetected leaks. Make sure to check frequently to avoid this.

A portion of the cost to repair a leak is usually covered by homeowner's insurance. That means your paying less than $300 out of pocket to find and repair leaks as opposed to the thousands further damage could cost.

Exceptionally high water bills are a tell tale sign of a home water leak. Double check with your water company, but this may may be an indication that it's time to call a plumber.

Always have a house checked for leaks before purchasing it. The minute you sign the dotted line those leaks become your problem and can cause unexpected property damage you didn't think you were buying into.

At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter we handle everything from leaky pipes to ceiling leaks and new toilet and sink installations. If you suspect there might be a costly leak in your home, give us a call at 516.874.7937 or visit our website for more information.

A Few Savvy Ways to Save on Electric

Sick and tired of one high electric bill after another? With winter weather as cold as this, we're not surprised that you're utilizing a little extra power to keep your toes feeling toasty and warm.

No reason to sacrifice cost for comfort. We have a few savvy ways you can save on electric:

Run appliances at night. Utility companies tend to charge higher rates during the day time because they know most people are about and awake. Therefore, you'll be able to save by running the washer machine at night. You can also confirm with your local utility company what their on and off peak hours are.

Try a light roof color. It's true! Home's with darker roofs spend almost 20% more in air conditioning charges than homes with lighter roofs. This is especially true in warm and sunny weather.

Replace filters. Dirty and old filters make your furnace work much harder than it has to, and trust us - your furnace is not the one paying for it.

Insulate properly. It only takes one air leak or improperly insulated area to let an abundance of hot or cold air into your home. To avoid paying double for your HVAC systems, take the time to weatherstrip and insulate accordingly.

There's an app for that! Want more personalized ways you can slash electric costs in your home? Apps, such as Bidgely, are available to help you find ways to save.

Mad you didn't think of these before we did? Don't be! That's what we're here for.

Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter offers all of the plumbing, sewer and drain services you need to keep your home up and running perfectly. Call us today at 877.713.8136 for emergency services or visit our website for more information.

Smart Home Plumbing Tips for Your Extended Vaca

Nassau County Plumber, Plumbing on Vacation

Are you as sick and tired of this cold and snowy winter as much as we are? If so, (and if you're lucky) you're probably packing up and heading out on a nice family (or friend) vacation!

Don't run so fast! To avoid coming home to a plumbing disaster that might make you feel worse than when you initially left, follow these smart tips before leaving your home on a week long vacation.

  • Turn off the main water supply to prevent bursts
  • Test the sump pump
  • Set the thermostat at 55 degrees
  • Winterize the drainage systems

You can turn off the main water supply, test the sump pump and turn down the thermostat in a matter of minutes. You may, however, need help from a professional for winterizing the drainage systems and this really only has to be done once a year.

If you are leaving for an extended period of time (say you spend the winter in Florida) you should complete the above steps, as well as unplugging all of your electronics.

If you're worried about leaving the house empty and dark, it's advised to set lights on a timer, as opposed to leaving them on for the entire time you're away.

Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter offers all of the plumbing, sewer and drain services you need to keep your home up and running perfectly. Call us today at 877.713.8136 for emergency services or visit our website for more information.

Home Water Treatment Options

Looking for smarter, better tasting water in your home? There are a wide array of treatment technologies available for your needs today. Choosing the one you want and need might be overwhelming. To help, we're summarizing the primary purpose of each:

water treatment, nassau county plumbing and sewer

Water Softening. Minerals like calcium and iron can build up in your water making it "hard." A water softener works to relieve your water from these minerals, making it softer along with your laundry, skin and hair.

Water Purification: Whether you want to take bad water and make it safe to drink or take good water and just make it better, purification systems are installed to improve the quality and taste of drinking water for human consumption.

Saltless Water Conditioning Systems: If you need a water treatment system but prefer not to use salt, one of the saltless water systems might be best for you. There are various types of saltless water systems including scale reduction systems, ultraviolet disinfection systems, filtration systems and RO whole house water treatment systems.

Water Filtration: With this system you can truly filter the water with a filter cartridge. They can be installed on the water pipes themselves or at the point where water enters the home.

Whole House Water Treatment Systems: Whether it is a water softener or filter, if it treats all the water throughout your house it is a whole house water treatment system. It depends on how many faucets you want to improve.

Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter offers all of the plumbing, sewer and drain services you need to keep your home up and running perfectly. Call us today at 877.713.8136 for emergency services or visit our website for more information.

Tips for Choosing a New Boiler

If this winter is being harsh on your home, you are certainly not alone. You might even be shopping around for a new boiler to make your home and water a little warmer.

Since it has probably been awhile since your last purchase, we're sharing everything you need to know when it comes to choosing a new boiler that will work for you.

Know the size of your home. You want to choose a boiler that has the capacity to heat no less or no more than the size of your home. Be as accurate as possible in your measurements and, if you must, choose the slightly larger furnace if there is not one available that directly accommodates your square footage.

Check the efficiency rating. Since not all gas boilers burn the same amount of gas, you'll want to consider the efficiency rating. The higher the efficiency rating, the less gas it burns - meaning it can do more for your home with less.

Get more than 3 quotes on contract rates. You're going to need a professional to install your new boiler. You'll want to get more than three quotes to ensure you're getting the best prices. Knowing they are properly insured and have good reviews is also important.

Consider the warranty. A longer warranty is a better warranty because it means your getting more value in the parts you are purchasing. An 8-10 year limited manufacturers warranty is pretty typical.

Need your boiler repaired in Nassau County? We provide emergency services 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Call our emergency line at 877.713.8136 or visit our website for more information.

3 Reasons for a Slow Flushing Toilet

It can be extremely frustrating to have any sort of plumbing out of order in your home. Whether it's as simple as a slow flushing toilet or as disastrous as one that overflows, we're unable to complete a lot of regularly daily tasks we never even think twice about.

While a slow flushing toilet might seem like nothing more than a slightly strange inconvenience, it could be the start to a more major plumbing problem. Here's a few good reasons it could be happening:

An obstruction in your sewer line. To find out if your sewer is the problem, run water from a pipe that is higher than the toilet. A sink in the same bathroom or on the floor above would be a good idea. If the toilet shakes, or the water rises or bubbles, your sewer is probably to blame. Problems with your sewer typically require a professional.

A faulty flush valve. If the water level is also lower than usual, your flush valve could be causing the slow flush. For a simple fix, first check the toilet tank to see if the flapper is warped. Even if it's just more than 5 years old, it may be beneficial to replace this part.

Dirty jets. Calcium build up at the rim of the bowl can inhibit water from freely flowing through the toilet. You can easily give your jets a deep clean with a homemade cleaner made up of baking soda and vinegar. If you're not sure how to do this, give the professionals at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter a call.

Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter is available 24/7 for plumbing needs in the bathroom and around the house. Call us today at 516.874.7937 or visit our website for more information.

Sings Your Main Sewer Line is Clogged

While few people want to think about their sewer line, given that its main purpose is carrying waste water away from the home, it is still a good idea to pay it some attention. A sewer clog is a plumbing emergency and should be dealt with immediately. Therefore, becoming familiar with warning signs will be helpful in identifying potential issues as a homeowner. Find three main signs below:

  1. Multiple fixtures in your home are clogged. Since toilets are given a direct path to the main sewer line, there are few situations in which the main line is clogged and the toilets are fine. Therefore, when more than one toilet is backed up, you found a red flag. Tubs and showers are commonly affected, as well.
  2. Water is gurgling or filling up in strange places. You flush the toilet and water rises in your shower, you run the bathroom sink and the toilet water bubbles. Strange, right? Not really. This is just a very clear sign that water is trying to leave your home and can't, most likely due to a sewer line clog.
  3. Smell of raw sewage coming from drains. Trust us, it's a terrible smell; you won't miss it. If an odor is coming from areas where drains exist, you probably have a whole lot of waste water hanging around that shouldn't be. Clearing the clog will help to eliminate that smell.

Worried your have a sewer clog? At New York Plumbing and Sewer Rooter, we're available for all of your plumbing emergencies and needs. Call us at 516-874-7937 today! LIKE us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and connect with us on Google+ for more updates and plumbing information.
