Wet Wipes are Plaguing Our New York City Sewer Systems

According to a recent article in The New York Times titled, "The Wet Wipes Box Says Flush, but the New York City Sewer System Says Don't," New York City is working to combat the destruction wets wipes in plumbing networks cause.

Wet wipes, originally used for baby care, are now growing popular with adults and becoming increasingly present in worldwide sewer systems. The problem, however, is that the box says flushable but the truth is they're indestructible. Combined with congealed grease and other sewage materials, the city is left spending an enormous amount of money mechanically collecting solid waste for disposal.

Public awareness is in the works - with the intent to spread the importance of throwing "flushable" wipes in the trash.

Flushable Wipes Aren't That Flushable

"How convenient!" consumers think. "A soft and effective wipe that I can throw down my toilet just like toilet paper." The truth? These 'flushable' wipes that have been on the market for years are actually clogging up septic systems everywhere. 

As sales accelerate, so do the number of clogs in our world's sewer system. According to Bloomberg, "the hygiene fad costs governments millions of dollars a year." 

The moral of the story? Not everything that clears your toilet is truly flushable and not every product advertised as flushable actually is. Using greater precaution and thinking twice before putting things down the drain might save our city, with the largest U.S. sewer system, up to $18 million dollars over the next few years.

Flushable Wipes Clogging US Sewer Systems

Bathroom wipes are becoming increasingly popular.  These pre-moistened towelettes are often advertised as flushable, meaning they are safe to dispose of in your toilet.  Recently these bathroom wipes are being blamed for creating clogs and backups in the nation's sewer systems.

Many of these wipes, even the ones labeled flushable, are going down the toilet but not breaking down quickly.  This is costing some municipalities millions of dollars to hire crews to unclog the pipes and pumps and even replace and upgrade machinery.  Manufacturers insist wipes labeled flushable aren't the problem, blaming it instead on things like paper towels, feminine hygiene products and baby wipes clearly marked as non-flushable.  The Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry recently specified seven tests for manufacturers to use to determine which wipes to call flushable.  For more information on how these bathroom products are affecting our sewer systems please visit http://goo.gl/P0lMEL.
