August is National Water Quality Month!

August is Water Quality Month! The way we treat the land around our homes can have a huge impact on the quality of water we clean with, cook with and drink every day. Here are some tips to help keep pollutants out of local water:

  1. Make sure your trash can lids are secure to ensure trash is staying out of streets and storm drains.
  2. Position your sprinklers so they are only watering your lawn, not the street or sidewalk.
  3. Always take household water to a household hazardous waste collection program.
  4. Pick up after your pet each time you go on walks.
  5. Only use fertilizers and pesticides during dry weather and limit the use all together.
  6. Plant native trees and shrubs to help the absorption and filtration of pollutants from rainwater.

There are also ways you can get involved with maintaining our land to improve water quality on a community scale. On Saturday, September 27th, 2014 from 10:00am - 4:00pm, head over to Bethpage State Park to help clean and maintain existing trails.
