Find the Perfect Bathroom Sink

Looking for the perfect bathroom sink? From size to personal style, there are many factors to think about before buying one. No sink is alike, which makes the decision all the more difficult, but don’t worry! In an attempt to help, we’ve compiled a list of different bathroom sinks you should consider:

Wall mounted sinks. Is your bathroom on the small side? A wall mounted sink may be the ideal solution. It allows for more space even if yours is very limited. Some feature decorative covers that are installed over your plumbing and drain pipe to suit your interior style!

Pedestal sinks. Similar to the wall mounted sink, these sinks are attached to the wall but rests on top of a pedestal, which is mounted to the ground. These are also a great option for small baths as there is no need for a bulky vanity.

Vessel sinks. For unlimited design options, choose a vessel sink. These sinks are simply free-standing bowls that rest on your vanity (though partially mounted). The steepness of these bowls also make it less likely for you to splash all over your countertops when washing up.

Self-rimming square sinks. These square sinks are cut out and placed perfectly in your vanity top, secured by the unique design of its rim. Self-rimming sinks feature molding around the edges for a more traditional appearance.

Once you’ve settled on the perfect sink for your bathroom, make sure your plumbing is properly installed. Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter offers all of the plumbing, sewer and drain services you need to keep your bathroom sink running as perfect as it looks! #TuesdayTips Make Your Small Kitchen Look Bigger

Don’t let your small kitchen limit your creativity. With just a few designing tips, you can get the large kitchen you’ve been dreaming of! A little paint, craftsmanship, and imagination can go a long way. Here are five ways to get the kitchen you’ve always wanted:

Paint it white. Go all white in a small kitchen. White paint reflects light, which bounces off all walls and creates an airy space. Make your space look seamlessly tall and wide by carrying white from your cabinets all the way to your ceiling.

Replace cabinet doors with glass. Create the illusion of a larger space by removing wood cabinets and adding glass doors. Your eye will move past cabinet frames and into the depths of your cabinets, so your walls will feel like they’ve been pushed back farther.

Let the light in. Natural light will enlarge any space. Even if you have small windows, you can maximize the amount of light that comes through. Keep window treatments to a minimum and opt for sheer curtains or a valance.

Carve out storage. Shelves that are carved into the wall will not only add more storage space, but will also make your kitchen appear larger. Use recessed shelves with a trimmed finish to match woodwork that is already in your kitchen.

Eliminate clutter. Crowded counter tops are sure to make your small kitchen look even more cramped. To enlarge the space, clear off counters and windowsills. Leave as much behind closed cabinets and pantries as you can.

Save Water While Washing the Dishes

Today is No Dirty Dishes Day! Choose to eat meals out or use disposable paper plates, but if you must use your finest dishes, make sure you stay earth friendly while cleaning them. Keep in mind that a little effort can go a long way!

Here are five tips to help you save water while washing your dishes:

Scrape your plate. If you’re like most people, you probably place your dirty plate in the sink without wiping it off. Give water a break by clearing dirty dishes before you stack them in the sink! When your plate is covered with leftover food, go over to the trash and clean it off.

Pile the dishes.
After you’ve scraped off your plates, pile them together in the sink. Instead of reaching for one plate at a time, keep your dishes close to prevent the sink water from running longer.

Fill your sink.
Do you hand wash your dishes? If so, plug up the sink and fill it with warm, soapy water. When you don’t let the water run the entire time you clean, you can save 200-500 gallons per month!

Full loads only.
Unless you have a big family or you’re hosting a party, there’s no need to load the dishwasher after each meal you eat. Conserve over 400 gallons of water each month by waiting until it’s completely full!

Read soap labels.
Did you know most people use 10 to 15 times more soap than they actually need? Most soaps are very concentrated and if you use too much of it, you’ll need to rinse more than is necessary. Read the label on your dish soap to ensure you’re using just the right amount!

How to Reduce Allergens in the Bathroom

May is National Allergy/Asthma Awareness Month. Itching, sneezing, runny nose - there’s nothing more irritating than those pesky allergens that creep inside your home. One of biggest problem areas in the house? It may surprise you, but your bathroom is the number one spot. Why? Because moisture makes it easy for allergy-producing molds to build up. So take action and protect yourself from allergens with these five tips

Clean up. Wipe down surfaces daily, starting with sinks and countertops. Next, tidy up the shower. With all the humidity that accumulates after a hot shower, you’ll want to prevent mold from building up. A mildew-fighting spray or bleach solution can scrub away the growth of fungus in minutes.

Clear the air. Pollen, dust, and pet dander are three of the major allergy triggers that you definitely want to fight off. Indoor air circulation can blow these airborne allergens around the house, making you more irritable. Try an air cleaner with a HEPA filter to trap harmful particles in the air.

Reduce humidity.
Combine a hot shower with poor ventilation and you have yourself a mold and mildew problem. Not only that, but moisture alone creates a “breeding ground” for allergens. To combat the issue, keep humidity 50 percent or less and toss your damp towel in the washer/dryer.

Remodel. There’s a number of strategies you can implement to reduce allergens in your bathroom with a simple remodeling plan. Replacing carpet with tile, wood, or vinyl can tame sneezing by eliminating dust and other allergens that stick. When looking for new decor, select washable rugs and clean them often. Do you have wallpaper? Rip it down for a coat of fresh paint to prevent mold growth.

Fix Leaks. A leaky pipe or toilet can cause water to seep into drywall and insulation, and damage your floors and walls. It’s important to keep up on bathroom maintenance to prevent potential problems that can bring on more allergy discomfort. Fix plumbing leaks before mold and mildew sneak up on you.

Reduce Humidity in Your Home

Although we love the summer heat, we don’t necessarily love the discomfort of humidity that comes along with it; and as New Yorkers, we know this all too well. While we can’t necessarily avoid the humidity outside, we can work to reduce it inside. Below are some tips to get you started.

 1. Ventilate. If you have a vent fan, use it. Make sure to turn them on when you take a shower or cook a meal and leave them on a little longer. “It only takes between four and six pints of water to raise the humidity level inside of 1,000 square feet from a mere 15% to 60%.” So whether you’re boiling water or bathing, be sure to pay close attention to the amount of humidity you feel.

2. Take quick showers. If you can lower the water temperature, that will help too. Using a low flow shower head will help to reduce hot water, ultimately lowering levels of humidity in the bathroom.

3. Cover pots and pans. Stove top cooking can produce excess moisture, so try to cover your food with lids while cooking to keep the air drier. Slow cookers also contribute to less indoor humidity, so take advantage of that!

4. Turn on the AC. When it’s not dry enough outside to crack open a window, run the AC to ensure you’re getting a proper level of dry air coming into the house. Although it may be a pricey solution, it will cost you your health in the long run.

5. Use a dehumidifier. It’s exactly what it sounds like! Dehumidifiers are great for maintaining your humidity if it’s become a big issue or if you live in an older home. Bathrooms without windows can especially benefit from them. To make sure the air is circulating properly, place away from walls and furniture.

Keep humidity out! Not only is it bad for your health, but it can also cause plumbing issues. When humidity in warmer air collects on cold surfaces like your pipes, you get condensation - not a good condition for your home. But don’t worry! If you run across any plumbing troubles, we’re here to help.

Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter offers all of the plumbing, sewer and drain services you need to keep your home up and running perfectly. Call us today at 877.713.8136 for emergency services or visit our website for more information.

Clean Your Bathroom in 5 Minutes

Do you spend hours trying to catch up on cleaning your bathroom? Don’t bother! Truth is that just five minutes a day can save you time in the long run.

Using the five minute rule really does work. Here's how:
Minute One. Dedicate this time to clear off surfaces. Put away the flat iron and magazines. Stow away your makeup and toss that old towel into the laundry bin. Pick dirty clothes off the floor too!

Minute Two. It’s all about surface cleaning. Apply some toilet bowl cleaner and let it sit until the last few seconds. Wipe any toothpaste, hair, and dust off counter tops. Don’t forget the sink and toilet tank as well. Circle your toilet brush around in the final seconds and you’re good to go.

Minute Three.
Straighten things up. Refold towels, make sure you have enough toilet paper, and close your shower curtain so it can air out. If you finish that quickly, straighten up those lotion and shampoo bottles on your counter tops and in the shower.

Minute Four.
Almost done! It’s time to check your mirrors for splashes of toothpaste. Wipe it down with your favorite glass cleaner to brighten up the space. If your mirror is already spotless, take this minute to add some shine to your sink and bath fixtures. Those final touches really make a difference!

Minute Five.
Do your kids make your bathroom extra messy? Don’t panic - you have a whole 60 seconds to tidy up anything out of sorts, take a step back, and access all the work you did!

There you have it! Five quick minutes to keep your bathroom looking fresh. For maximum cleanliness, use this system every day (if possible). Skipping a few days could add time to a fairly quick routine, so make an effort to give yourself a little extra time either morning or night. Final advice? Don’t let these 5 minutes intimidate you!

If you run across troubles with plumbing or drain systems during your five minute cleanup, turn to Nassau Plumbing and Sewer Rooter -  your trusted Nassau County plumber, ready to handle all of your sewer and drain cleaning needs! Foods You Should Never Put Down the Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal

Do you have a handy garbage disposal in your kitchen? Using these waste units can be easy, but what we may not realize is that they are easy to damage. The main problem? Food. Food has the tendency to get stuck on the way down, which can cause damage to your pipes!

Here are five foods you should never put down the kitchen sink garbage disposal:

Meat. Especially raw meat - it becomes stringy and gets caught around the blades. If you must dispose, be sure to send it down in very small pieces.

Grease and Oil. Grease easily clogs up the garbage disposal and ruins your pipes. To be on the safe side, either wipe it off with a paper towel or run cold water when sending greasy food down the drain.

Pasta and Rice. No matter how much water you run, it’s difficult to break down the starch in rice. Cooked or uncooked, pasta and rice can easily swell and clog your pipes.

Flour. It may be soft and grainy, but once flour becomes wet, it turns into glue. It then becomes hard and thick when dry, which can cause problems for your disposal.

Fruit Peels. The tough skin of fruit is hard to break down and can easily get caught in your garbage disposal. Rule of thumb: Never dispose half a fruit or larger all at once. Banana peels should never be put down the disposal, as they are long, slimy, and stringy.

It’s always a good idea to scrape food off your plates before washing them. Remember, your garbage disposal shouldn’t be used as a substitute for your trash bin.

Is your kitchen sink garbage disposal already clogged or worn? Don’t worry - that’s why we’re here! Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter is your solution for all sewer, drain, and pipe problems. Give us a call at 516.974.7937 or visit our website for more information.
