1700 B.C
The Indus River civilizations created the first sewage system on record. They used underground tunnels, wooden spouts and a grid system that was far ahead of their time.

312 B.C 
The Romans invented the aqueduct system to carry fresh water into the capital city. At their peak, the aqueducts were carrying over 1 billion liters of water a day!

1596 
John Harrington, the godson of Queen Elizabeth, invents the first flushing toilet in England. The original toilet was called “The John,” and that nickname still stands today.

1854 
A cholera outbreak in England forces governments around the world to take sewage seriously. A year later, Chicago became the first American city to build a comprehensive sewer system.

1890
The world's first drinking water treatment systems are built in Massachusetts to reduce microbial contamination. The techniques they invented there are still in existence today!

1920
Tank toilets emerged on the market and reduced previous water consumption by 40%. The tank was made possible when William E. Sloan invented the flush-o-meter 10 years prior. The flush-o-meter used the pressure from the water supply system to help flush waste down the drain. Both of these inventions helped conserve as much as 200 million gallons of water a day.

1966
Due to a copper shortage, plastic piping was invented as an alternative. Today, we refer to this plastic piping as PVC pipe.

Present
The plumbing industry employs close to 500,000 people per year and grossed over $100 billion dollars in 2015.

Why Your Shower Water Is Cold

There’s almost no worse feeling than hopping into a shower only to discover that your water is too cold. If only your shower water would heat up, then you could feel better as you start your day. Sometimes your water heater just needs a little time to work, but if your shower goes from hot to cold you know you a problem on your hands. Here’s a quick way to figure it out:

1. No hot water throughout your home
Is your shower the only problem area in the home? To answer this question, check the water temperature in your other bathrooms or in the kitchen. If it’s a no-go around the entire house, your problem very well might be your water heater. In this case, check the temperature control on the unit and make sure the setting is just right. The pilot light could also be out. If this is the underlying problem, it needs to be re-lit. If none of that works, call a professional to help you find the underlying cause.

2. No hot water in the shower only
If other fixtures provide you with hot water throughout the rest of your home, then you know the problem is most likely not your water heater. If your home is on the newer side, you’ll be relieved to know you likely don’t need your pipes replaced. However, if your home is old and has galvanized steel pipes rather than copper pipes, you might have a corrosion. Another way to solve the problem is to 1) find the shut off valve and 2) make sure it’s not closed. If it is, opening the valve might solve the problem. However, if that doesn’t do the trick, the problem might be your shower valve. To be safe, call your local, trusted plumber to take a close look.

Standalone tubs. Especially soak tubs, are growing popular. These items were once for luxury homes only, but thanks to a range of options from different manufacturers, they're getting more affordable for everyone.

Simple Tips to Make Your Bathroom Look Bigger
