New Efficiency Standards On Residential Water Heaters

Your water heater is the second biggest energy-consuming appliance in your home! Did you know that? The U.S. Department of Energy does. That's why they are putting new efficiency standards into effect for residential water heaters. When will this new energy efficiency standard take effect? April, 2015 - sooner than you might think. As a result, water heaters utilizing new energy-efficient technology will be introduced in to the market. There are a great deal of benefits that come with having such appliances in your home. 

As stated in the Federal Regulation Fact Sheet for Residential Water heaters, the new legislation will:

• save approximately 3.3 quads of energy
• result in approximately $63 billion in energy bill savings for products shipped from 2015 to 2044
• avoid about 172.5 million metric tons of C02 emissions
• decrease energy usage of large electric water heaters by 47%

National Curb Appeal Month: Budget-Friendly Updates

We talk a lot about perfecting the plumbing inside of your home. With August being Nation Curb Appeal Month, we thought now is a good time to take our tips outside.

Looking for budget friendly ways to celebrate? We have a few ideas we think you'll be excited about:

1. Dazzle up the door - A new coat of color on your front door can make your home feel brand new. To find out what color is right for you, take this Quiz.

2. Devote a day to gardening - A well maintained garden and flower bed makes a home look loved and cared for. Annual flowers are your best bet in a color that adds accent to your home.

3. Wash it right up - The sidewalk, your driveways, front windows; spray it all! A garden hose on its strongest setting will do the trick, and the only cost is the one that will show up on your water bill.

4.  Update light fixtures - Replace light fixtures with brighter ones or just give them a quick paint fix. In the evening, front lights draw the eye to certain parts of your home and can make or break your home's curb appeal.

5. Trim and tidy - Keep garbage bins stored away and bushes from overgrowing. Remove branches that block driveways and windows, and reseal cracks in your blacktop.

Perfect Plumbing For Your Back-To-School Routine

Back-to-school time is just around the corner. Your kids may be excited for new teachers and classmates, but getting back into the swing of that busy morning routine has you worried. Guess what? Your pipes are worried too!

Once shopping for school supplies, first day outfits and new shoes is complete, take a moment to talk with your family about how you can avoid plumbing disasters this September. Your home may see a spike in water use this month, so educate your kids on a few ways they can help save.

Back-To-School Plumbing Tips

Split up the showers between morning and night. This will allow everyone to receive optimal water temperature and pressure, and avoid morning arguments! Also, consider adding a 5-minute maximum rule.

If your bath mat is old or worn, considering replacing with a new non-slip one. Slipping and falling in the bathroom is the cause of more household injuries than you might think. This will help keep everyone safe as they are getting ready to head out the door.

Remind your kids to turn off the water when they are brushing their teeth. Brushing your teeth with the water on wastes up to 100 gallons of water per person, per month. A family of five can save 500 gallons of water just by sticking to this trick in September.

Consider calling a plumber for routine maintenance before the school year starts to make sure everything is in great working condition. Either way, pay extra close attention to your pipes this time of year. They are doing a lot of work!

No matter how much of a rush you are in, be mindful of little mistakes - like throwing unwanted items down the toilet instead of into the garbage pale. It may only take one piece of floss to clog drain right up.

August is National Water Quality Month!

August is Water Quality Month! The way we treat the land around our homes can have a huge impact on the quality of water we clean with, cook with and drink every day. Here are some tips to help keep pollutants out of local water:

1. Make sure your trash can lids are secure to ensure trash is staying out of streets and storm drains. 
2. Position your sprinklers so they are only watering your lawn, not the street or sidewalk. 
3. Always take household water to a household hazardous waste collection program. 
4. Pick up after your pet each time you go on walks.
5. Only use fertilizers and pesticides during dry weather and limit the use all together.
6. Plant native trees and shrubs to help the absorption and filtration of pollutants from rainwater.

Sings Your Main Sewer Line is Clogged

While few people want to think about their sewer line, given that its main purpose is carrying waste water away from the home, it is still a good idea to pay it some attention. A sewer clog is a plumbing emergency and should be dealt with immediately. Therefore, becoming familiar with warning signs will be helpful in identifying potential issues as a homeowner. Find three main signs below:

1. Multiple fixtures in your home are clogged. Since toilets are given a direct path to the main sewer line, there are few situations in which the main line is clogged and the toilets are fine. Therefore, when more than one toilet is backed up, you found a red flag. Tubs and showers are commonly affected, as well. 
2. Water is gurgling or filling up in strange places. You flush the toilet and water rises in your shower, you run the bathroom sink and the toilet water bubbles. Strange, right? Not really. This is just a very clear sign that water is trying to leave your home and can't, most likely due to a sewer line clog. 
3. Smell of raw sewage coming from drains. Trust us, it's a terrible smell; you won't miss it. If an odor is coming from areas where drains exist, you probably have a whole lot of waste water hanging around that shouldn't be. Clearing the clog will help to eliminate that smell.

A typical septic system includes a house sewer drain, septic tank, distribution box and soil absorption field. To keep these components working properly, be sure to perform the following:

1. Periodically inspect your system and pump out your septic tank
2. Install fixtures that increase water conservation
3. Keep hazardous wastes out of sinks and toilets
4. Keep other systems away from drainfield 
5. Plant only grass on top of or near your septic system
6. Do not drive or park vehicles on your septic system
