Girl Scouts of Nassau County: Happy 102nd Birthday

At NY Plumbing and Sewer Rooter were proud of our community and enjoy celebrating milestones with one another. Wednesday, March 12th, 2014 is Girl Scout's 102nd birthday! As an organization much older than all of us, it is important to remember how dedicated they have been to providing our children with confidence and character to make the world a better place. As plumbers we believe in the value of good character and good service and want to help spread the word!

New Generation of Cheap Water Filters: Inspired by Nature!

MIT engineers are testing out new and cheap ways to filter water, and all you need is a stick! Costly manmade filters are reliable, but unaffordable for the developing world. That's why scientist Rohit Karnik is testing out the technology beneath the bark of an ordinary tree!

According to Time, "The branch’s vascular system contains membranes designed to filter out microscopic air bubbles. Karnik found that those same membranes could filter out harmful bacteria as well, apparently as much as 99.9%." If you've ever heard of a tree's xylem, that is what he is talking about.

The possible health risks have not been confirmed, but there is no doubt we're taking filtration in a whole new direction!

#TipsTuesday: Quick Tips on Toilets!

With Fix a Leak Week getting closer and closer, we're gathering more tips and tricks on how to use your appliances more efficiently! This week...the toilet. Being one of the most important appliances in the home, it's important to understand all the little quirks that go with it. Courtesy of elocalplumber.com, we've listed some here:

• The toilet uses the most water out of any household appliance. Toilet leaks only add to the water consumption and, thus, should be checked for consistently. Note they are not always noticeable. To see if there is an internal leak, put food coloring in the tank and check the toilet bowl later. If the bowl water is colored, there is a leak from the tank. This may mean you need to replace the tank ball or flapper. This test should be performed at least once a year. 
• A slow flushing toilet should never be ignored because it can cause overflows and backups. The usual causes are partial clogs, sediment buildup, or malfunctions with equipment in the tank. Conduct periodic checks on your toilet to diagnose the problem. 
• Household cleaners are oftentimes detrimental to the proper functioning of a toilet. This is especially true for drop-in cleaner tabs. When they are almost dissolved, the tank flushes the debris into the toilet bowl and it often gets stuck in the port holes, which are vital to the flushing mechanism. This debris is very hard to clean and you can be left waiting months for it to completely dissolve without the help of a professional. 
• Never flush sanitary items down the toilet. An eco-friendly alternative to flushing these clog-causing products is to dispose of them in bio-degradable bags, such as the ones produced by Golden Group International.

Green Plumbing: Low-Efficiency Plumbing Ban Clears Colorado Senate

The Plumbing world is certainly looking at a huge change when it comes to choosing and installing appliances. Colorado is modeling the way as the senate mandates a phase-out of toilets, faucets and shower heads that use too much water. 

"Senators voted 19-16 in favor of a bill to prohibit the sale of low-efficiency plumbing fixtures by 2016." No one would have to replace their current plumbing fixtures, however, builders of new homes would be required to at least offer water-efficient indoor plumbing fixtures, even if homeowners choose otherwise. 

With the drought in mind, water conservation is a movement that is and should be supported by everyone.
