Energy Action Month: Ways to Save

Did you know that energy and water usage actually go hand in hand? When we rely on our water heater to deliver hot water to our shower, we're using energy just as much as we are water.

Since October is Energy Action Month, were sharing a few quick ways you can reduce energy use when it comes to your plumbing.

  • Replace old shower heads with water-efficient ones
  • Install low-flow aerators on faucets which cut down on water use
  • Ensure your water heater has an insulating blanket
  • Turn down the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Clean or replace filters in your furnace and heat pump
  • Insulate your hot water pipes
  • Check for both air leaks and water leaks in your home

#ThirstyEnergy: World Water Week 2014

For many here in New York, this week means back to school shopping and the first day of school. However, for many around the world, specifically in Stockholm, Sweden, this week is World Water Week, a time to foster new thinking and develop water solutions.

What's on their to-do list? One thing they will be talking about for sure is how energy consumption and water consumption go hand in hand. Energy is thirstier than you may realize and with energy consumption said to increase by 35% in the next 20 years, water consumption will be increasing by 85%.

How can you help make a difference? Water-efficient plumbing fixtures is not a bad place to start! Not only will you be contributing to water conservation by installing low-flow appliances, you'll also see savings on your water bill.

July is Smart Irrigation Month: Use Water Wisely

Water use peaks in July. That is why the Irrigation Association is looking to get 100 supporters by July 7th in celebration of Smart Irrigation Month. Smart Irrigation Month is all about educating each other about efficient water use and encouraging smart irrigation practices and technologies in order to save water.

Find some tips about using water wisely below:

1. Schedule each individual zone in your irrigation system. Some spots get more sun than other. Instead of watering your entire lawn to compensate for this, just schedule that one section differently.

2. Make sure water is being used only where it's necessary. Be aware of where you are setting your sprinkler. If it's watering your driveway more than your plants, try adjusting it.

3. Water when the sun is low or down. Watering during the hottest parts of the day wastes water because of evaporation.

4. Water frequently, and in short intervals. A system of 3, 5-minute intervals makes for better water absorption than 15 minutes of watering at one time.

5. Adjust the watering schedule based on season. If you are not familiar with the settings on your irrigation system, consider installing a smart controller which makes these adjustments automatically.

At NY Plumbing & Sewer Rooter we understand the value of using water wisely. There are plenty of ways you can save water inside and outside of your home, including the installation of water-efficient plumbing fixtures. Call us today for assistance.

Green Plumbing: Low-Efficiency Plumbing Ban Clears Colorado Senate

The Plumbing world is certainly looking at a huge change when it comes to choosing and installing appliances. Colorado is modeling the way as the senate mandates a phase-out of toilets, faucets and shower heads that use too much water.

"Senators voted 19-16 in favor of a bill to prohibit the sale of low-efficiency plumbing fixtures by 2016." No one would have to replace their current plumbing fixtures, however, builders of new homes would be required to at least offer water-efficient indoor plumbing fixtures, even if homeowners choose otherwise.

With the drought in mind, water conservation is a movement that is and should be supported by everyone. NY Plumber and Sewer Rooter is happy to install or replace any and all plumbing fixtures in your home. We are also interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter. Should this be a movement in other states? What about New York? Let us know what you think on our Facebook page.
