The History of Heating

Just like the invention of plumbing, the rise of heating systems took a long time to evolve into what they are today. In fact, it could have taken as long as 1 million years! From the discovery of fire to the invention of the furnace, it was a long ride filled with a few steps forward and then a few back. Today, over 85% of the homes in America have some form of heating system and we owe it all to those who came before us. Here is a timeline of the events that led to heating as we know it:
Heating Repair, Heating Emergency, heating repair nassau, heating repair suffolk, furnace repair long island, furnace repair nassau
A Very Long Time Ago: Human beings discover fire which allows for the advancement of the species. Originally it was only for warmth, then it became a source for cooking meats to disinfect them. Safe to say without this discovery, we wouldn't be in business today.
7500 B.C: This is when we started to see open hearths in homes and building structures. For years, humans had experimented with controlled heating systems and this is the most primitive and original form.
2500 B.C: In the Temple of Ephesus, archaeologists discovered flues in the ground that circulated heat created by fire. The Greek and Roman empires were so advanced that we didn't see these types of radiant heating systems again until the late 18th century.
1200 A.D: Monks in christian monasteries started experimenting with central heating using wood-burning furnaces. They would dispose of the smoke by using what would later become known as the chimney.
1400 A.D: Masonry stoves begin to appear and these evolve over time into the wood and pellet burning stoves that we still see today.
1700 A.D: This was during the rise of the steam engine and its inventor, James Watt, decided to put it into the realm of home heating. The system worked on a central boiler and a system of pipes.
1935 A.D: Scientists develop convection wall heaters that use a coal burning furnace, electric fan and duct work to transport heat throughout your home. Eventually this turns into gas and electric burning furnaces that can be controlled with the push of a button.

As heating advanced, there became a need for services that could repair and install its parts. That is where we fit into this whole timeline. For over 50 years, Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter has been providing heating service to the Nassau County area and we love what we do. Our technicians are highly trained and they have the experience to repair or install whatever heating system you are working with.

Positive Plumbing Choices For Your Home

When it comes to plumbing, you can never be too careful. Little leaks or other issues can expand quickly and leave you in a state of panic. To help alleviate the stress of a plumbing problem, you can make some precautionary decisions that will lower your risk. Just keep reading and when you're finished, start implementing these changes!

Drop the Drano
These chemical cleaners are effective in certain situations, but they can also damage your plumbing. People think they have cleared a clogged because the drain appears to be functioning, but this often isn't the case. These cleaners usually do just enough of the job to allow for passage, but they don't clear the entire problem. In addition to that, they are also known to eat away at your plumbing.
Use Faucet Aerators
Aerators might look small, but they can lead to big savings on your water bill. This attachment controls water flow from your faucet so that you are only using the amount of water you need to clean your hands, wash dishes and perform other tasks. They also help prevent costly faucet leaks and give you the peace of mind you desire.
Avoid Toilet Fresheners
They might make some pretty blue water, but they can also do serious damage to your toilet bowl. Over time, the chemicals used to provide a fresh scent can eat away at your toilet tank the same way Drano can. These tablets can also disintegrate in water and get themselves stuck in the flush valve of your bowl. Long story short, avoid the in-tank cleaners!
Avoid Fiddling
Adjusting the pressure valve on your water heater or fiddling with things you don't understand can only lead to problems. Know your own level of familiarity with plumbing and only perform the tasks that you have had success with in the past.
Call the Professionals
It is important to have trust in the plumbing service that you choose. The general rule of thumb here is; If you like the service you received last time, go right back to that team. There is no reason to try someone new to save a few bucks. Save the headache and trust the experts at Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter with all of your plumbing and heating needs.

You want a plumber with experience, competitive pricing and 24/7 emergency service for your convenience. Luckily, we can provide all three of your needs and we do so with a commitment to excellent customer service. Decorating Your Bathroom for Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner and the Night of the Living Dead is sure to bring some surprises to the Nassau County area. Just kidding, but it doesn't hurt to get in the spirit of the season and what better place to start than the bathroom. There are a number of different things you can try and there is no limit on where you can take it. Put your creativity to the test and see just how festive you can make the bathroom or bathrooms in your home!

Scented Candles
Everybody loves a pleasant fall scent. Whether it is a nice apple crisp or pumpkin pie, everyone enjoys satisfying their nostrils. So why not bring these scents into the bathroom? Yankee and American Candle both offer a line of fall flavored candles that are sure to spice up any room in your home!

Fall Curtains
The bathroom window really ties together the whole room. If your paint allows it, you should consider throwing a fall themed curtain on your rod. Maybe one that features a Halloween pumpkin or a nice orange and green blend that lets your guests know you're in the fall spirit!

Pumpkin Dispenser
Your soap dispenser doesn't have to be bland and boring, it can draw eyes to your beautiful vanity set up. If you don't want to go all out with the pumpkin, you could just pick out a dispenser that matches your fall themed bathroom. If you're really into design, you can also pick out some hand towels or napkins that bring together all of your decor.

Spooky Shower Curtains
We've all seen the horror films where the man jumps out from behind the shower curtain to haunt his targets. Well, you could scare some guests by purchasing a spooky shower curtain of your own. You could go online and scroll through a number of curtains that feature shadows of Jason, Freddy Krueger and some of your other favorite Halloween villains. It is sure to spook at least one unsuspecting bathroom goer.

Unfortunately, decor is not the only thing we have to worry about in the bathroom. Halloween leads us directly into Thanksgiving and that means more guests will be pouring into your home and using your plumbing. It is up to you to take the proper precautions and make sure your pipes, fixtures and faucets are prepared for a busy holiday season.

Preparing Your Furnace For the New York Winter

The fall season is flying by and the winter is shortly over the horizon. This means it is time to get serious about the current state of your furnace. If you decide to leave it as is, you are making a mistake and taking a chance that you might lose heat at the most inopportune time of winter. Applying these maintenance tips to your weekend routine could go a long way in providing long lasting heat to get you through the cold.

Your Maintenance Tools
  • Filters
  • Vacuum
  • Screwdriver
  • A Helping Hand
Maintenance Checklist
  1. Similar to a central air unit, a furnace needs to maintain a clean filter for maximum efficiency. The first thing you'll need to do is remove that filter and exchange it for a new one. Make sure that when you install it, the arrows are facing the same way as the filter you just removed.
  2. If you're in the maintenance mood, you might as well upgrade that old filter of yours. Try using a HEPA filter this season and see if you notice the difference in air quality.
  3. The next thing you'll need to do is clean out the vents and ducts. Over time, these areas can suffer from dust build up and collect debris that will impede air flow. Cleaning this area is fairly simple. All you have to do is remove the plate with a screwdriver and vacuum up whatever is inside. It can get narrow, so you might want to use the extension to get a full clean.
  4. Don't put your screwdriver away, you'll need it for this next step. You're going to want to remove the steel plate that is covering your main air handler. Once you've done this, locate your blower belt (the big rubber thing) and make sure it isn't cracked or loose. If it does appear to be waning, call in the professionals and let them have a look.
  5. The last step is to check on the exhaust flue that carries unwanted air out of your home. Make sure it is free of obstructions so that you avoid dangerous blockages.
At Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter, we are more than just a plumber. We have been providing quality heating and plumbing service to the Nassau County area for over 50 years and we are look forward to another season!

Plumbing FAQ's

It takes a special person to be a plumber, and that leaves the rest of the world wanting to know their secrets. How to fix this, how to fix that, and all that knowledge lies in the brain of a single plumber. We can't tell you all of our secrets, but here are just a few of the answers to some of your most common plumbing questions.
appliance installation Nassau, appliance installation Suffolk, appliance repair Nassau, Pipe Installation Nassau, Pipe repair Nassau, pipe repair queens, Pipe repair suffolk
Why Is My Toilet Running?
A running toilet might not seem like a big deal-- until the water bill shows up! Constant re-filling tanks are relatively easy to fix and well within the knowledge of most homeowners. It could be something as small as fixing the connection between the handle-flapper and the bar. If it is more complicated than that, you should call in the professionals at Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter and let us take a look at your fill valve.

Why Is My Water Brown?
Hopefully you don't have another Flint situation on your hands! This could be related to a number of different things and most of them are fixable. The Fire Department might be flushing out hydrants or your pipes could be old and rusted. This is something you should take seriously, but it might be out of our hands if it is non-pipe related.

How Long Should a Hot Water Heater Last?
In most cases, water heaters last around fifteen years. Some longer, some shorter depending on your ability to maintain and repair it.

What Should I Do If Something Falls In the Toilet?
When it comes to paper clogs, a plunger should suffice. But for those irregular shaped objects like jewelry or toys, you'll need the help of a professional.

Why Are My Pipes Noisy?
Noisy pipes can give your home a spooky feeling, but their not that hard to fix. Often times, the noise is related to a loose fitting or air bubbles inside the line. Both are very fixable for you DIY-ers out there. A loose pipe can be secured with a proper fitting from your local hardware store. If air is your problem, your pipes need to be bled to relieve the pressure.

If you have any more questions for us, we would love to answer them on your next appointment. Whether you need a drain cleaning, water heater repair or pipe installation, call Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter and ask about our 24/7 Emergency Service.

What You Need To Know About Floor Heating

Floor heating, or radiant floor heating, has been around since Ancient Rome and it is gaining popularity of late. Traditional heating systems do a great job throughout the winter, but they leave out one key component-- the floor. We all know heat rises, so what better place to start then the bottom of your home? Keep reading to learn a little more about what radiant floor heating can do for you.

No More Cold Feet
On those cold, New York winter mornings, there is nothing worse than getting out of the shower. It's nice and warm on the inside, but the last thing you want to do is put your feet on the iceberg that is your bathroom floor. Well, installing a heating system on that very same floor can take away all of your fears. Start ending your showers with confidence!

Smooth Heat
Compared to a forced air system, floor heating gives you a nice even temperature. When air is blown into a room, it settles near the ceiling and then only half of your body is getting the desired temperature. With a radiant floor system, it builds from the bottom up, evenly distributing heat along the way.

Options
Radiant floor heating has evolved over the years and it has split into two main categories.
  • Hydraulic Systems- These floor heating systems tend to have a high initial cost with a lot of savings down the road. They pump hot water through a series of plastic pipes under your floor to maintain the desired room temperature. Over time, this saves a ton of energy because the hot water is often recycled and pumped back through the system. It is also better for indoor air quality and homes where people have asthma.
  • Electric Systems- These are perfect for heating small areas like your bathroom but they are often too expensive for the entire home. This system uses a series of plastic mats, which contain copper wires that radiate heat throughout the room.
If you're interested in learning more about the array of heating services we offer, don't hesitate to give us a call. Our friendly customer service representatives will advise you on your options and send a technician out whenever you are ready. At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter, we take customer service seriously, and it shows on each and every visit.

Pumpkin Picking & More On Long Island

Long Island has so much to offer 365 days a year. The summer brings lovely beaches and the fall brings the farm life that outsiders don't expect us to have. This type of diversity is what makes Long Island so great and this is one of our favorite times of the year. The weather is cooling off and the families of Long Island are heading out to these farms to have some fun this weekend!

This is the perfect place to take your family for a little weekend fall fun. Hopefully the weather holds up so you can enjoy their kid-friendly corn maze, petting zoo and face painting station. While you're here, you can enjoy some delicious apple cider and relax while your children enjoy themselves.

26 Pinelawn Road
Melville, NY 11747
This farm features a massive pumpkin patch with some of the largest pumpkins on the island. You can also enjoy their wonderful hayrides, slides and straw pyramid with the younger ones in your family. But after the sun goes down, it turns into a haunted place where only adults and teenagers can roam!

250 Old Country Road
Melville, NY 11747
This is one of the oldest and most accommodating farms on the island. For one fee, your family can enjoy the animal farm, dog show, sing-along hayride and bounce park. If that doesn't knock out the little ones, let them roam around in the pumpkin patch and pick out some prize winners. Plus, it is right on Old Country Road so the Nassau County folks don't have to take the long trek on the LIE.

812 Sound Avenue
Wading River, NY 11792
This 1,100-acre family farm doesn't have all the flare that the previous farms did. What it does have is an abundance of fresh produce, pumpkins and a real old school feel. Their main attraction is roasted corn and it is definitely worth every penny!

If we left any of your favorite Long Island farms off the list, feel free to share them with us on Facebook or Twitter!

Different Uses For Copper Pipe

Copper piping is valuable and should never be wasted. Most plumbing jobs result in scrap copper and that leaves people thinking of some creative ways to utilize it. You could always cash it in, but there are also some DIY copper projects that are worth looking into.
Toilet Paper Roll
You'll first want to clean your piping to give it that beautiful shine. Once you have done this, you'll need to go to the hardware store and pick up some fittings that coincide with the diameter of your leftover pipe. Wrap the fitting around your new holder, screw it into the wall and gaze upon your DIY bathroom decoration.

Garden Guarder
Have you ever crushed your flowers with the hose by accident? Well that is in the past once you start using your copper garden guarders. Start by caulking a copper cap to one end of a tube and drive the other end into the soil in front of your flowers. Your garden now has a 24 hour watch dog.

Wind Chimes
Copper gives off a beautiful shine and an even sweeter sound. Take that scrap copper and cut it at various lengths; the longer the tube, the deeper the sound. After you have 6 or 7 tubes, drill a small hole in their tops and loop some fishing line through the opening. Attach the other end to a stick and hang the chime for your enjoyment.

Gutter Cleaner
Use your hammer to flatten the last 6 inches of a long piece of copper tubing. Then take that end and bend it into a 90 degree angle. You now have a long, effective hook to clean the leaves out of those gutters this fall.

Towel Racks
Now you can make a copper towel rack to go along with your toilet paper holder. Once you purchase matching holders, cut the pipe into the appropriate length. Feed the tube into the hole and then drill the fixture into the wall. You might want to go to the store and buy some new towels to go along with your fresh, metallic look.

If you have some other copper projects you want to share, please do so on our Facebook and Twitter pages!

5 Signs You Have a Great Plumber

When a pipe breaks, there is no time to go reading reviews and asking around for the best plumber in the area. You need to be doing that now so you're ready when disaster strikes. Hopefully, you like the work of the service you used last time and you'll continue using them in the future. Here are some signs that the plumber you've got is doing just fine!
appliance installation Suffolk, appliance repair Nassau, plumbing repair Long Island, plumbing repair nassau, Plumbers in Nassau, Plumbers in Queens
1. It's All Fixed
This is obviously the most important measure of a great plumber. Does that leaky faucet still leak? If the answer is yes, you should start looking for a new service. The best plumbers can fix a number of different jobs and adjust to your specific needs. The bad guys leave the job worse than they found it.

2. It's Clean
Nobody wants a plumbing job to turn into a destructive mess. A good plumber will leave your home cleaner than they found it and you shouldn't have to ask. If the job is going to take multiple days, tools should be wrapped up and stowed away so nobody comes into contact with them. The bad guys treat your home like a storage facility.

3. Everything Is Sealed
If a plumber has to access the pipes inside your walls, they'll have to cause some damage to your Sheetrock. After they have completed the job, those holes should be repaired to avoid any unwanted guests. The bad guys leave your bathroom looking like a machine gun went off in there.

4. They're On Time
If your appointment is scheduled for 1pm, that means 12:55 arrival! A plumber knows the importance of punctuality and there is no reason you should have to wait. Sometimes other jobs run late and a good plumbing service will apologize and work with you to reschedule. The bad guys will leave you guessing.

5. They Explain Their Work
Sometimes plumbers discover more problems when they go in to fix the one you signed up for. They should let you know what they think is your best option and this doesn't automatically mean the most expensive upgrades. If they think a bigger problem will occur if they don't treat it now, they should communicate that to you and help scan through your options. The bad guys stay quiet.

At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter we are lucky to have some of the best plumbers in the business. They can check off all the boxes on your list and they consistently receive great feedback from our customers.

5 Warning Signs of a Faulty Heating System

Once the calendar flips into October the nighttime air will see a steady drop off. That makes this the perfect time to evaluate your old heating system and proceed with the proper maintenance or replacement. Replacing your unit might seem unnecessary, but it could be wasting money in places you didn't even notice. Take a look at these five warning signs and determine if your unit fits the criteria for a replacement.
Heating LI, heating repair nassau, heating repair suffolk, furnace repair nassau, furnace repair long island, boiler warning signs
Age
If your furnace or boiler is outdated, it is wasting energy and it is just simply unsafe. The experts at Energy Star recommend replacing your old heating unit with a more efficient one after 15 years. New qualified furnaces are 15% more efficient than older units and while they have a high initial cost, their long term savings are worth the investment.

Uneven Heating
This could be related to duct problems in your home and it is a sign that you aren't getting the most out of your heating system. The problem could be related to multiple factors and only a heating professional would be able to tell you where the issue lies.

Excessive Dust
Heating and cooling systems can harm your indoor air quality if they aren't being maintained properly. Try changing your filters or sealing your ducts before you make any drastic decisions. If this doesn't work, you could have a bigger problem on your hands that might require the installation of a new unit.

Noise
If your unit is humming an annoying buzzing sound, this isn't something you should ignore. Not only is it irritating, but it could be a sign that your duct system is undersized or your coils are malfunctioning.

Constant Repairs
Sometimes heating repairs are beneficial if you have a trustworthy technician like the guys at Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter. But there comes a point where repairs start adding up to the cost of a new heating system. You need to sit down and go over how much a new unit will cost and how long it will take you to make that money back in energy savings. If the numbers match up, a new unit could be your most viable option.

Whether you choose to replace or repair, look no further than Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter for your service. We are more than just a plumber and we offer an array of heating services to the Nassau and Suffolk areas. Let's get your home ready for the cold together!

Preparing Your Home for Fall

The fall is a wonderful time of year. Football is on all weekend, pumpkin spice fills the air and it can be easy to forget the cold weather that is approaching. As a homeowner, you need to prepare for the seasons to help increase your home's efficiency and dodge those major malfunctions. It doesn't take long, just a few hours on your day off and you can avoid those headaches later on.
Fall Cleaning Tips, Long Island Plumbing, long island plumber, appliance repair Nassau, Nassau Plumbing, plumber Suffolk County, plumbing repair suffolk
Clean Those Gutters
On the lanes you want to avoid the gutters at all costs. When it comes to fall preparation, you want to get in there and remove fallen leaves and debris. If you don't want to worry about future problems, go to the local hardware store and purchase mesh guards to protect your gutters.

Clean Your Furnace Filter
The heating season is approaching and your furnace needs a little help getting in shape. The first thing you should do is remove the unit's filter and exchange it for a new one. It's like the first day of school, you never want to go in with an old outfit! It might also be wise to have a heating professional come into your home and inspect your system and call out any problems before they become larger.

Winterize Your Plumbing
In the next few weeks, you're going to want to perform your annual outdoor water shut-off. Winterizing these pipes and irrigation systems will ensure their safety going into next summer. If you neglect this year in and year out, you're just asking for trouble.

Perform Your Seasonal Safety Check
This is a great time to check in on your CO monitors, inspect fire safety equipment and review your appliances efficiency. Look for leaky faucets, loose plumbing lines and make sure your home is sealed properly. There is no need to waste water or heat when you could be spending money on more valuable things.

The fall can be hectic with back to school, sports, work and all of your families daily activities. It might still feel like summer, but the cold weather is approaching and you know your home needs some plumbing and heating tune-ups if it is going to get you through the season. At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter, we can perform both inspections in a timely and professional manner.

The Man In the Toilet

long island plumber, Drain Cleaning Nassau, nassau county plumber, Pipe repair Nassau, plumber Nassau County, LI drain cleaning
Hello,

My name is Tommy and I live inside your toilet. First a little background on me. I was born microscopically small because of a recessive gene on my dad's side and that is how I got in here. My parents lost me when I was very young, you know, because I am so microscopic and all. I was looking for friends and I found some down here in your toilet and we have a bone to pick with you.

First off, I know you're stubborn, but you can't keep flushing wipes down the toilet big guy. They might say 'flush-able,' but believe me they aren't. Once they get down here where we live, they never dissolve and they just cause a giant road block. So for our sake and yours, please keep the wipes in the trash bin.

Secondly, please take the makeup products off the back of the toilet bowl. Your wife has so much of it that I am sure you are running out of room, but the toilet is no place to rest it. I have a friend who lives in a toilet a town over and he said a lipstick cover fell down his drain and they were out of commission for a week. I don't want that for either of us, so please don't put anything up there that could fall in!

We also need to talk about you cleaning things up a little better. There are people living down here! When it is time for bathroom cleanup, make sure you get a good scrub in under the seat, lid and inside of the bowl. Don't use those tank cleaners because they could cause more problems than they're worth. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Next time the drain starts to back up, use our friend the plunger instead of Drano. The chemicals in Drano do dissolve the clog, but they also eat away at the plumbing.

We try and keep things neat and tidy down here in the drain but we are very little people. Sometimes it takes the help of a plumbing professional to take care of drain clogs. The best guys for the job are over at  Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter so I would suggest giving them a call. All of the neighborhood toilet people are raving about them.

What You Need To Know About Trees and Your Sewer

The sewer is not only a place for the ninja turtles, it could also be housing an unwanted guest-- the tree in your yard! As trees grow, their roots extend deeper into the soil and they look for water and nutrients anywhere they can get it. Their search might leave them inside of your sewer, and that is certainly not ideal. Let's take a deeper look into how root infestation starts and some possible ways to prevent it.
LI Sewer, Sewer cleaning Long Island, sewer and drain cleaning, Nassau Plumbing and Sewer Rooter, tree root infestation, long island plumber
What attracts trees to sewer lines?
To homeowners, a sewer is just a convenient way to get rid of your excess water and waste. To a tree, a sewer is a pipeline of nutrients that are critical for survival. As warm wastewater travels through your pipeline, some of the moisture escapes into the cooler soil that surrounds it. If a tree is in the vicinity, it will naturally try and stretch its roots to the source of this moisture. Once it arrives, it can enter the pipe through even the smallest cracks and begin to expand once it is inside.

How bad can it get?
Well, it really depends on how early you can diagnose the problem. Slow draining water, noisy toilets and backed up drains are all indicators of possible sewer line damage. If you have experienced any of these problems, you might want to schedule a video inspection of your pipes. This is the most effective way to determine if tree roots or anything else has infiltrated their pathway.

Is there anything I can do to prevent it?
It can be hard to prevent damage that you can’t see approaching, but it isn’t impossible. Before you improve your landscape, you should be aware of where your laterals and main sewer lines are located. Try and keep all of your trees and shrubs at least 10 feet away from these areas. If you already have some large trees on your property, you should schedule regular maintenance with a professional. This will help catch major sewer blockages before they occur.

At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter, we offer a wide range of plumbing and sewer services to help ease your troubles. We have been in the business for over 50 years and that experience has given us the tools to handle any job.

Tips For Making Your Bathroom More Environmentally Friendly

The best place to start your environmentally conscious changes is inside your own home, and the bathroom in particular. We use the bathroom multiple times a day and if we are being reckless, the environmental damage can really add up. Lucky for you, these going green tips will help you reduce your environmental impact.
bathroom upgrade Nassau, bathroom upgrade NYC, going green, long island plumber, long island bathroom, Plumbers in Queens
Convert to All-Natural
The bathroom should be a place where you can relax, freshen up and feel comfortable. All-natural hygiene products like soaps, shampoos and scrubs can help you do that while also protecting the environment. As you wash, the soapy water that is left behind will eventually find its way down the drain and into your sewage system. If those soaps contain chemicals that create an imbalance in the water, that could mean disaster for the wildlife that comes into contact with it. Help keep your water clean by looking for the 100% All-Natural sticker on all of your bathing products. And if you are feeling extra green, you could even use all-natural candles instead of those chemical-filled air fresheners.

Conserve Water
When it comes to the environment, conserving water is always a positive. A low-flow shower head can help reduce water consumption by up to 30 percent and that will lead to utilities savings as well. While you're at it, you might as well upgrade your faucet and toilet too!  Another environmentally friendly plumbing change you can make is insulating your pipes. Proper insulation will help water heat up faster and you won't have to run the faucet for a minute to get your desired temperature. Less water use results in more savings and a brighter future!

Planning the Perfect Labor Day Party on Long Island

Labor day weekend marks the last big party weekend of the summer. You owe it to yourself and Summer 2016 to plan the best Labor Day party that you can. You'll need all the right decorations, food and games to make your party stand out from the rest. And if you have any plumbing problems that you think might ruin the occasion, Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter will be there to save the day. So let's get started!

Pick a Theme
America is never a bad choice on a day like Labor Day! You could go to the store and buy American flag napkins, cups and even forks and knives if you're feeling extra patriotic. As for the dress, you could play around with the "no white," rule that typically applies to post-labor day fashion. Since white clothes will be out of the wardrobe in the coming months, you could ask your guests to wear all white at your party. This is a fun little idea and it will make for great pictures!

Pick Your Food
While a BBQ might seem cliche, it is just the most classic way to end the summer. On your trip to the store, be sure to pickup some chicken/vegetable kabobs, burgers and hot dogs. You want to enjoy your time with friends and family before going back to work, so there is no time to be slaving away in the kitchen. These classic treats are tasty and easy to cook. Enjoy!

Pick Out Some Games
You want to make sure the leisure activities you have planned are safe and fun for the whole family. For the adults, Corn Hole is a great choice and you might even find that you enjoy it more than the classic horseshoes. There are two players per team and games are played to 21, may the best man win! As for the kids, a slip-n-slide will keep them cool, happy and busy. Can you ask for anything more?

Please feel free to share your Labor Day party pictures with us on Facebook or Twitter!

And remember, more guests might lead to plumbing problems, so make sure your system is in working order before the big day. If you need help, call Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter at 516-874-7937 or visit us on the web!

Plumbing Jobs For the Pros

Even if you're feeling confident in your ability, there are some plumbing jobs you just shouldn't mess with. Trying to save a few bucks is always good, but your lack of expertise could lead to more expensive problems in the future. Here are some of the plumbing tasks that we recommend leaving to the the professionals at Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter:
Complex Pipe Problems
By complex, we mean basically anything above tightening a loose fitting. If you start messing with pipes on your own, you could open the door for leaks, floods and a multitude of different problems.

Water Heater Repairs
Whether you have an electric or gas burning heater, DIY fixes could be hazardous. Just think about it, do you really want to mess with gas or electrical hazards just to save cash? Our technicians have had years of training and their odds of coming out unscathed are far better than yours.

Gas/Propane Related Jobs
This doesn't really need to be said, but gas is extremely combustible and dangerous. Even the smallest leak in a gas line could lead to catastrophic consequences for you and your family. Please leave these tasks to your plumbing or heating professionals.

Permit Related Work
If you are expanding your bathroom or kitchen, the work likely requires a permit. Even if you are fully capable of producing quality work, it might not pass a formal inspection. Plumbing professionals are aware of the local laws, codes and provisions that need to be met for this type of work.

At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter, our plumbing technicians are fully licensed and insured. We have been serving the Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and NYC area for over 50 years and all of our work is fully guaranteed. Whether your plumbing problems happen at noon or midnight, we will be there in as little as thirty minutes!

An Inside Look at Your Plumber's Toolbox

Preparation is the key to success when it comes to the plumbing profession. If you don't have the right tools handy, you won't be able to fix those leaky faucets or clogged drains. Just like a superhero has his powers, plumbers have their torches, hacksaws and plungers to fight off leaky crime.

Drain Cleaning Long Island, long island plumber, plumber Nassau County, plumbing repair NYC, plumbing repair queens, plumbing repair Long Island, plumbing tools

Let's take a look at some of the tools that you might find in your plumber's toolbox:

Propane Torch
A torch?! Why does he need a torch? Don't worry it is not as scary as it sounds. Plumbers need heat if they are going to sweat your copper pipes or fittings.

Channellocks
This is usually the first tool out of the box on house visits. Plumbers will use this form of pliers to grab, pull, twist or hold pipe fittings.

Hacksaw
Have you ever heard of the football player named Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds? Well he earned that nickname because of his toughness and this saw certainly is tough. It is used to cut through bolts, pipes and other plumbing hardware.

Pipe Wrench
Pipes and plumbers go hand in hand, so naturally every plumber must own a pipe wrench. Most of them have two; one for holding and gripping a fitting, and the other for turning. If they only have one, they must have some pretty strong hands!

Plunger
This common household tool is often referred to as a plumbers best friend- and for good reason. After all these years, the plunger is still the most effective tool for unclogging sinks, tubs and toilets.

The skill to use all of these tools is what separates a good plumber from a great one. At Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter, all of our plumbers are highly skilled and great at what they do. If you want to schedule service, just call 516-874-7937 or visit our website!

Tips You'll Need For Dog Bathing

We all love our dogs, but sometimes they just flat out stink! The obvious solution would be to give them a bath, but sometimes this is just too much of a hassle. Well you are in luck, because these five bathing tips for dogs will make things much easier.
Bathing tips, Drain Cleaning Long Island, Drain Cleaning Nassau, long island plumber, Nassau Plumbing, Pet Bathing Tips, Plumbing Tips
Tip 1: Don't Wash Them Too Often
Dogs don't require the same cleaning schedule that you do. Experts recommend you clean your dog once a month, unless they have a skin infection. Bathing them too frequently can lead to knots, irritation and all sorts of uncomfortable rashes.

Tip 2: Ease Them Into It
At some point in your life you had to be taught how to bathe. Well, the same goes for your dog. You can start by putting them in the tub and leaving the water off for awhile. Play with Fluffy for a little while so he/she starts to associate the bath with play time. After they have calmed down a bit, you can slowly start cupping water and placing it on their backs.

Tip 3: Make Sure You Have the Right Shampoo
Pet stores try and run you dry with their prices, but you have to bite the bullet when it comes to shampoo. You don't want to use human shampoo on dogs because their skin has a different pH balance then ours does.

Tip 4: Remember the Drain
When Fluffy makes a mad dash for dry freedom, you need to turn your focus to the drain. It's really just common sense, dogs have more hair than we do, so they leave more of it behind in the tub. Be sure to scoop up any wet hair that you can get your hands on. Once you have done that, run the water a little bit to make sure the rest of the hair you missed is washed down the drain.

Tip 5:  Give Fluffy a Treat
When you trained him/her to sit, did you do so with the help of treats? The answer is probably yes, so make sure you do the same after they take a bath. Once you can get them to associate bathing with their favorite snack, you'll have to beg them to get out of the tub!

At Nassau County Plumbing & Sewer Rooter, we know how important it is to keep you and your dog clean. But you can't do that without the cooperation of your plumbing. If you are having any plumbing problems, give us a call at 516-874-7937 or visit us on the web!

How To Care For Your Washing Machine

Maintaining your washer machine is a good way to avoid cleaning up after it. With the kids going back to school, the dirty clothes are going to start piling up. Whether you are washing football jerseys, school clothes or leotards, you need your washer machine to go into the school year in peak form.
washer machine maintenance, long island plumber, Nassau plumber, Suffolk plumber, appliance installation Nassau, appliance installation Suffolk, appliance repair Nassau
Inspect the Hoses
The hoses on your washer machine are responsible for giving and taking water from your main unit. Just like pipes, these hoses are susceptible to wear and tear, so it is important to stay on top of them. If you notice any blistering or cracks, you'll want to replace the hose as soon as possible. Neglecting the issue will leave you cleaning up very expensive flood damage.

Keep it Level
Despite what some may think, the washer machine is not supposed to shake. Vibrations are caused by the legs of the unit being out of sync, and this is not to be ignored. Most standard washing machines have adjustable legs that are easy to access with the proper tools. If your not really a tool person, try leveling off the unit with some wooden shims.

Avoid Overloading
Consult your owners manual to figure out the proper load size for your unit. Keep a little scale next to your laundry so that you can meet the requirements. Over sized loads aren't good for the washer machine or your clothes.

Prevent Flood Damage
If your washing machine does fall on hard times, you want to have the proper precautions in place to avoid major flood damage. An emergency water shutoff system prevents water damage by automatically shutting off the water flow when a malfunction is detected. So if you are upstairs while the laundry is running, this will help back you up.

If any of your appliances need installation or repair, call the experts at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter. We have all of the experience and tools that you need to get the job done. To schedule service, call 516-874-7937 or visit us on the web!

How You Can Help Keep Water Clean

Water is essential to life on earth, and that does not solely mean human beings. This earth is all of ours to share, and keeping the water on it clean is everyone's responsibility. August is National Water Quality Month, so there is no better time to learn how you can contribute to a cleaner future for our water!
National Water Quality Month, water quality tips, Nassau County Plumber, Plumbing Nassau County, plumbing queens, Plumbing Suffolk County
Be mindful of outdoor surfaces.
When a summer storm ends, the runoff heads towards the storm drains to be treated and recycled. On it's path, the water picks up all types of pollutants from hard surfaces like asphalt and concrete. If possible, you might want to switch your outdoor surfaces to paving stone or gravel.

Keep non-degradable products out of the toilet.
Not only is it bad for your plumbing, but throwing things like wipes and tampon applicators down the toilet can really disrupt the sewage process. These items often wind up littering the environment or worse- they wind up hurting animals.

Keep certain things out of your sink drain.
Certain household cleaners don't belong in your sink. Chemical based cleaners might contain sodium hypochlorite, ammonia and formaldehyde. And in case you were wondering, you don't want any of those chemicals anywhere near your water.

Clean up after pets.
Not only is it courteous, but cleaning up after pets can also help maintain a cleaner water supply. Fecal matter and water simply don't mix, but far too often this winds up being the case. When it rains, your pets waste is washed from the street or the grass into storm drains. That very same water is then dumped into a water treatment plant to be recycled. Gross!

Upgrade your plumbing.
Old pipes are susceptible to rust and corrosion that can contaminate your water. Galvanized steel piping was the standard in many old homes, but you should consider upgrading to the much safer PVC piping.

Improving the water quality on earth is going to take quite some time, but you have to start somewhere. If every person does their part, we can have safe drinking water for centuries to come.

If you are interested in upgrading your plumbing to ensure cleaner water for your family, call the experts at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter. We can handle repairs, installations and just about anything else you throw at us. To schedule an appointment call 516-874-7937 or visit our website!

The Biggest Plumbing Problems

No matter what kind of home you have, the plumbing is not going to last forever. Problems will occur at some point in time, whether you like it or not. That is why it is so important to have a good plumber you can call to fix them quickly. The first step in solving any problem is knowing what the problem is. So here is your list of the most troublesome plumbing and sewer problems:

Cracked Pipes
It is not smart to apply the out of sight, out of mind saying to your pipes. While everything might seem fine on the surface, you have no idea what is going on underneath. If your home was built a long time ago, the plumbing likely was too, and that is not good for you. Over time, galvanized steel and copper pipes will start to develop cracks that can lead to major leaks and even floods.

Tree Roots
If you have an older tree sitting on your property, you would be surprised at just how far its roots can stretch. If they stretch into your sewer pipes, you could be in trouble. The roots are not easy to navigate around, so infiltration can lead to total blockages in your sewer line and you might not be aware of it until it is too late.

Drain Clogs
If your kitchen and bathroom are constantly in use, there is a good chance at least one of your drains will become clogged. There are various DIY methods to unclogging drains, but sometimes the problem is just too large to get rid of without the help of a professional. You could have worse problems, but drain clogs can be tricky, so it is important to handle them quickly.

No matter how big or small the problem might be, turn to the experts at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter to take care of it for you. All of our plumbers are fully licensed and great at what they do. To schedule your next appointment, call us at 516-874-7937 or visit us on the web!

The Most Effective Way to Clean Your Kitchen

You clean to cook, you cook and then you clean what you cooked. Is this how most of your nights in the kitchen are spent? All that cleaning might make you wonder if you are doing it right. In this instance, there really isn't a wrong way to do it, but like most things, there is a best way!
Kitchen cleaning tips, Long Island Plumbing, Plumbing Nassau County, Plumbing Suffolk County, Clesning tips Queens, Plumbers in Queens, Plumbers in Nassau
Step 1: Clear It Out
The kitchen is not a place for debris like unread mail, toys and shoes. Before you really dig deep into your cleaning, make sure you clear the floor, counters and drawers of anything that doesn't belong.

Step 2: Take Care of the Sink
Take some dish soap and give it a few squirts into your empty sink. Once you are satisfied, fill the sink halfway with warm water and begin scrubbing the walls with a sponge. After the whole sink is coated, let the soap settle and do its job in removing grease and stains.

Step 3: Dust the High Areas
Knock dirt and dust off of these neglected areas into a place where you can sweep them off later. Leaving these hard to reach areas alone will lead to a musty, allergy filled kitchen area.

Step 4: Wipe the Stovetop
Remove grill racks and set them aside in a safe place. Once your stove is clear, spray it down with some disinfectant and go to work. After you finish washing the dirtiest place in your kitchen- toss the rag, you won't be needing that again. Feel free to clean your grill racks too if they were the victim of some sauce overflow!

Step 5: Wipe the Countertops
This is the spot you really want to shine. If you have granite counters, the best course of action is to use a disinfectant wipe first. Begin by knocking all the crumbs to the ground and put some effort into scrubbing out those tough stains. Once this is complete, spray some granite cleaner onto your counters and wipe in a circular motion until they are sparkling.

Step 6: Sweep
Put on your best Cinderella impression and sweep those floors! All of the dust and crumbs that you knocked onto the floor throughout the process aren't going to get up and walk away on their own.

A clean kitchen means nothing if your plumbing isn't in working order. For more information on the extensive plumbing services that we offer, call the experts at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter. We can be reached at 516-874-7937 or by visiting us on the web!

Famous People Who Could Have Been Plumbers

In a profession like plumbing, you really have to be passionate about what you do. Being a plumber is no easy task, and even some of the greatest minds in the world have been fascinated with its intricacies. Whether you want to be a rock star, actor or super genius, plumbing could be the place to start.
Plumber NYC, plumber long island, plumber Nassau County, plumber Suffolk County, Ozzy Osbourne, Albert Einstein, Michael Caine
Albert Einstein
While his brain was thinking up the Theory of Relativity, Einstein was having dreams of what his life would have been like if he chose his preferred profession.. plumbing! Einstein was quoted saying that if he could do it all over again, he would be a plumber. Was he fully serious when he said that? Maybe, maybe not, but could you imagine what a brain like that could have done for the plumbing industry?

Ozzy Osbourne
Before he was tearing up the stage with Black Sabbath, Ozzy was just another kid who wanted to be a plumber. He became an apprentice at the age of 15 and worked with the same company for about two years. After that, he traded in his wrench for an ax and started revolutionizing music with his band mates. That career path probably suited him better, his plumbing buddies might not have taken so kindly to his bat biting antics.

Michael Caine
You know Caine for his work in Zulu, The Italian Job and Batman, but this academy award winner was fixing pipes long before appearing on the big screen. At age 16, he left school to join the service and did that until his 18th birthday. Upon returning home, Caine worked as a plumbing assistant before realizing his talent in the performing arts. If he had stuck it out in the plumbing world, Bruce Wayne would have to have found another Alfred.

We might not have any famous people in our ranks, but the experts at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter can get the job done! If you have any plumbing problems, call 516-874-7937 or visit our website to set up an appointment.

Bathroom Storage Tips

We would all love a bigger bathroom, but sometimes you need to make the most of what you have. There is a lot to store and limited space, so you are going to have to get creative with it. More storage does not have to mean less style. In fact, it means the complete opposite.

Wall Cabinets
Your bathroom floor space is getting crowded, so it is time to start using your walls. The wall cabinet helps kill two birds with one stone, it gives your bathroom another decoration, and it helps keeps things organized, what is better than that?

Storage Tower
The tower gives you an opportunity to store towels in a more unique fashion. After you have selected the perfect assortment of towels, roll them up and order them in their compartments at your discretion. Now gaze upon your beautifully organized, multi-colored, towel tower!

Wicker Storage Baskets
If there is some free space on top of your cabinets or underneath your sink, don't let it go to waste. Head down to the local craft store and select the wicker storage baskets that suit your bathroom the best. Once you get them home, fill each basket with some of those seldom used items and stow them away. You don't want them to be too noticeable, just enough to add a vintage look.

Vanity
If you are using a standalone sink, this could completely revolutionize your bathroom's style and storage. Most vanities come with three separate storage areas equipped with all sorts of shelves and compartments. But the perks of a vanity are not limited to only storage, the endless backslpash and counter options will leave you playing designer throughout the whole process. This addition is sure to catapult your old bathroom into the one you always imagined.

If some of your bathroom storage ideas were left off this list, please share them with us on Facebook!

Once your storage is fully upgraded, call the experts at Nassau County Plumbing and Sewer Rooter for all of your plumbing needs! You wouldn't want a plumbing problem to ruin all of your creative work.

When to Replace Your Plumbing

Time wins all battles, and your plumbing is not an exception. Eventually the repairs and quick fixes will catch up to you and the need for a new plumbing system will arise. Plumbing replacement can be an expensive investment, so it is important to know when the time is right.

Plumbing installation Nassau, plumbing repair NYC, plumbing repair queens, plumbing installation queens, plumbing installation nyc, Pipe repair Nassau

Know Your Plumbing
The first factor to consider is the age and condition of your current plumbing system. Copper, brass and galvanized steel have a life expectancy of around 80 years. Their lifespan is contingent on multiple factors, including damage, usage and corrosion. If you recently purchased a home, make sure you have the pipes inspected so you have a little background on the current state of your plumbing.

Pay Attention to Warning Signs
It is important to include plumbing on your home maintenance checklist. The average person is capable of detecting possible plumbing problems before they occur, all it takes is a watchful eye. Check out your exposed piping and look for any discoloration, stains, dimpling, pimples or flaking- all of these are corrosion indicators. Corroded pipes can lead to unsafe drinking water and they need to be replaced immediately.

Fix Them Up
If you and your plumber have decided that replacement is right for you, here are your best options. Copper and brass tubing is outdated and often more expensive than its competition. Plastic tubing is your best bet, and there are even options that require less demolition to install. Cross-linked Polyethylene (PEX) piping is a new form of tubing that runs behind your walls much like electrical lines. This tubing is relatively inexpensive, it's durable, and it's simple to install- what could be better?

Nobody likes having plumbing replaced, but if it is necessary, why not have it done right? At Nassau Plumbing and Sewer we know a thing or two about plumbing, and we are here to help.

Plumbing Leaks Cause Pest Infestations

Plumbing leaks are inconvenient no matter how you slice it, and they can even bring unwanted pests. Just like humans, pests need water to survive and plumbing leaks allow them a limitless supply. This is not to say that all pest problems are plumbing related, but it is definitely worth a little investigating.
plumbing leaks Long Island, plumbing leaks Nassau, plumbing pests, plumbing repair NYC, plumbing repair queens, NYC plumbing, Nassau Plumbing
The Investigation
Take note of the area that you are commonly seeing pests and inspect the nearest water source. The leak could be inside of your wall or in a tough to reach place, but most leaks are easily accessible. The area underneath your kitchen and bathroom sink are popular spots for insects to gather if there is moisture leaking from above. Often times, the leak is coming from the seal between the wall and the pipe that is entering it. Examine this area and make sure the seals are as tight as they should be. This could save your bathroom from becoming the party spot for the neighborhood cockroaches.

The Solution
Once you have determined where your leak is coming from, it is time to get all of the creepy crawlers out of your house! Calling in a plumbing professional to fix the leak is a good place to start. Once he/she cuts off the pests water supply, the time has come to give them a mini Armageddon. You can go to the local hardware store and purchase some pest removal products, or you can leave it to your local pest removal professional.

ATTENTION: The time to get rid of the pests is only AFTER the leak has been fixed. If you only focus on the surface of the problem, the pests will keep coming back.

If you need a plumbing professional to fix those tricky leaks, turn to Nassau Plumbing and Sewer Rooter! We provide 24 hour emergency service so you don’t have to wait until the morning. Give us a call at 516-874-7937 to schedule your appointment.
